A catalytic converter also sometimes referred to as a "cat" or "converter" is part of the exhaust system that is usually located between the header and the center muffler. The purpose of the catalytic converter is to reduce the toxicity of emission from the internal combustion of the engine. Cats were first introduced on automobiles in the US market for 1975 models to comply with the tightening EPA regulations on automotive exhaust systems. Catalytic converters are most commonly used in motor vehicle exhaust systems for all makes and models - Mercedes Benz, BMW, Porsche, Lexus, Audi, Volkswagen, Toyota and more. Catalytic converters are also used on forklifts, mining equipment, trucks, buses, trains, and other engine-equipped machines. A catalytic converter provides an a chemical reaction where toxic combustion by-products are converted to a less toxic substance.
